Path of Exile 2 Couch Co-op: PC Setup and One-Controller Play

Path of Exile 2 supports local two-player couch co-op on PC. This guide explains the normal setup, how one physical controller can be routed to two characters, and how Smart Focus and Smart Follow make solo-duo play manageable.

Is Path of Exile 2 couch co-op?

Yes. Path of Exile 2 includes local couch co-op for two players on the same PC or console. Both characters share the game view and can progress together on the same account. Online parties can contain more players, but couch co-op itself is a two-player local mode.

Short answer: PoE2 couch co-op works on PC with controller input. The normal experience is designed for two people. The independent Findigo tool extends that setup for a single player who wants to operate both characters from one physical controller.

Can you play two PoE2 characters with one controller?

The standard game flow expects separate controller inputs for the two local players. On Windows, the PoE2 Couch Co-op Tool can expose one physical XInput controller as two ordered virtual Xbox controllers.

This is not simple full mirroring. The controller is divided into useful roles:

  • Left stick: direct Player 1 movement.
  • Right stick: direct Player 2 movement or manual override.
  • Selected buttons: configurable routing to Player 2 during normal co-op.
  • L3 by default: Smart Focus routes the complete controller to Player 1.
  • R3 by default: Smart Focus routes the complete controller to Player 2.
  • Custom bindings: capture per-player button combinations or supported extra controller buttons; LT+L3 and LT+R3 are recommended.

That makes it possible to move and fight together, then instantly take precise control of one character for inventory management, passive allocation, positioning or a boss mechanic.

How one-controller PoE2 co-op works

The tool combines three Windows components into one guided session:

  1. HidHide prevents PoE2 from reading the physical controller directly.
  2. ViGEmBus presents two virtual Xbox controllers to the game.
  3. The Findigo routing engine decides which physical inputs reach Player 1, Player 2 or both.

Hiding the physical pad is important. If PoE2 sees both the physical controller and the virtual outputs, one input can leak into an extra XInput slot and make Player 2 appear to control Player 1. The app checks this protection before starting the game and restores the physical controller when the app closes.

PoE2 couch co-op setup on PC

  1. Connect an XInput controller. An official Xbox pad is not required; Windows only needs to expose the controller as Xbox/XInput.
  2. Open the couch co-op tool before PoE2. Press Start and wait for the controller-protection check to complete.
  3. Stay on the PoE2 login screen. Keep the LOG IN button visible and follow the pairing prompt shown over the game.
  4. Pair P1, release A, then pair P2. Press A once for Player 1, fully release it, and press A again when PoE2 asks Player 2 to join.
  5. Confirm the split controls. The left stick should move only P1 and the right stick should move only P2.

After pairing, the Memory Reader attaches automatically. Press Tab in-game to show or hide the radar. Back + Start restarts the pairing flow if the game assigns the players incorrectly.

Smart Focus and Smart Follow

Smart Focus

Smart Focus is the fast answer to the hardest part of one-controller play: moments when one character needs the entire controller. L3 isolates Player 1 and R3 isolates Player 2 by default. Version 2.1.0 can listen for a replacement binding for each player, including controller combinations and supported extra buttons. LT+L3 for P1 and LT+R3 for P2 are recommended to reduce accidental focus changes. The selected virtual controller receives the full input state while the other remains connected and neutral. Press the active focus binding again to return to simultaneous control.

Smart Follow

Smart Follow uses live character positions from the read-only Memory Reader. It guides P2 toward P1, stops at the configured distance and gives way immediately when you move P2 manually with the right stick.

You can tune stop distance, responsiveness and smoothing, enable sprint catch-up, add a close-range movement mirror and delay selected P2 attacks until the character has approached the fight.

Combat, flask and radar assists

The controller tool includes optional systems intended to reduce the repetitive work of operating two characters:

  • Per-player Auto Potion: independent Life and Mana decisions using live health and resource values.
  • Defence-aware rules: Energy Shield, Chaos Inoculation, Ward, low-Life and reserved-Mana support.
  • Menu Guard: pauses automatic flask inputs while inventory or other guarded menus are open.
  • Custom Auto Cast: timer or attack-triggered inputs routed directly to P1, P2 or both.
  • Memory radar: transparent terrain, monsters, exits, checkpoints, league mechanics and item-filter-aware loot.
  • Custom loot styling: category, bulk and individual styling for currency, equipment bases, flasks, Superior items and other observed loot, with more than 200 searchable icons.
  • Marker effects: optional glow and static or animated label borders, plus reset-to-default category icons.
  • Ritual reminder: an optional click-through reminder driven by PoE2's official Map Completed objective.

The radar respects the active in-game loot filter before applying the app's own visibility and styling. It can hide filter-exposed drops but cannot reveal items hidden by that filter. Its terrain, mechanics, loot, monster and boss visibility can be tuned independently.

Controller compatibility

The Windows app reads XInput. Official Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers work, as do many third-party controllers from vendors such as 8BitDo, GameSir and PowerA when they are placed in XInput or Xbox mode.

DualShock and DualSense controllers require an XInput translation layer such as DS4Windows or Steam Input. Native PlayStation HID is not read directly by the tool. When launching PoE2 through Steam, duplicate input is less likely if Steam Input is disabled for the game unless it is specifically required to translate the physical controller.

The app interface, pairing prompts, focus guidance and companion windows are localized in ten languages: English, Spanish, German, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Malay, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

Common PoE2 couch co-op controller problems

P2 also moves P1

The physical controller is probably still visible to PoE2. Close the game, run Repair HidHide + app access from Setup, then use the safe launcher so the controller is hidden before the game starts.

P2 moves both characters in one direction but not another

This usually indicates a mixture of physical and virtual XInput paths rather than a Smart Follow problem. Verify the HidHide cloak, restart the physical USB device if its instance path changed, and pair again from the login screen.

The Memory Reader does not start

Complete both pairing prompts first. If memory remains disconnected, use Restart memory reader under Setup or Diagnostics. The app can reattach without restarting the entire controller session.

The controller changes XInput slots

The app neutralizes both virtual pads and reacquires the physical source from the next deliberate button, trigger or stick movement. If PoE2 has already assigned the wrong pads, use Back + Start to repeat the ordered pairing sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Does PoE2 couch co-op require two accounts?

No. The built-in couch co-op flow can create and use the second character on the same Path of Exile account. Separate systems and online party play follow different account rules.

Does the tool write to PoE2 memory?

No. The Memory Reader reads player vitals, positions, map and entity information. It does not write game memory or manipulate network traffic.

Is an Xbox controller mandatory?

No. The physical controller only needs to appear to Windows as an XInput/Xbox device.

Is the tool affiliated with Grinding Gear Games?

No. Findigo is independent and is not endorsed by or affiliated with Grinding Gear Games. Third-party utilities can carry policy risk; review the risk disclosure before use.

Can every feature be tested before purchase?

Yes. Every download includes a one-time, device-bound three-hour trial with all features available.
