Through every portal
Zone and portal following helps followers come with you when you enter an echo or return. If anyone is left behind, D-pad Down or ~ warps them to you, and Warp followers further than can do it automatically. When you step into a new echo, followers still in the old zone warp in within 2 seconds.
In the fight
Followers join when you attack and go for bosses and rares first. Use Melee or Ranged ranges so each character fights from the right distance. See Followers that fight.
When things go wrong
Auto respawn recovers fallen followers and can warp them back to MAIN. If MAIN dies, control moves to a survivor, P1 respawns and rejoins the party. More in Bosses & deaths.
Harder echoes and bosses can hit hard. Take control of a character yourself whenever a fight needs it.

Do followers come through echo portals?
Yes. Zone and portal following brings them with you, and anyone left in another zone warps to you within 2 seconds.
Will followers dodge every boss attack?
Avoid danger and Stay behind target are experimental. They don’t recognise every attack, so take control yourself in dangerous encounters.
What if a follower dies in an echo?
Auto respawn recovers it and, if you choose, warps it back to MAIN.
